Summary/Abstract: This article is comprised of two parts: the first, empirical part focuses on the linguistic customs within a formal context as well as on the attitude towards the Czech standard language of eight students of Czech Studies at different Czech universities. The results show that our respondents are capable of using the standard language. Additionally, they consider it to be adequate in a highly formal context. Their attitude towards the current Czech standard language is positive; they refuse a move or extension towards substandard language. The second, theoretical part discusses a number of approaches of western standardology with respect to terminology and variability within the linguistic standard.
