Summary/Abstract: The Romanian literary folklore keeps subtle, metaphorical, nevertheless powerful clues on the initiation of young women. The necessary phase before their marriage infers primordial times of purification for the entire community. Numerous Christmas carols but also other species such as fairy tales depict a maid in isolation and darkness. Her relation to the beasts, embodying chaos, and her gestures have magic value and reconstruct the world. The moon and water are her distinct signs during initiation as she gets united to them. The analysis also contains a stylistic approach as the form of the text has been perfected over many generations and as such, is a source of valuable information.
