Summary/Abstract: The paper analyzes Aleksa Šantić’s manuscripts held by the National and University Library in Zagreb (in the Manuscripts and Old Books Collection). The material consists of eight hand-signed letters and four sonnets. Three of the sonnets (“A Night in Prizren,” “Fire,” “A Night in Trpanj”) are versions of the later published poems, and one (“Why?”) is considered to be unpublished. As regards the hand-written correspondence of Aleksa Šantić, this Library keeps a note thanking the Croatian Writers’ Association for their card sent on the occasion of the poet’s 50th birthday, a letter to Branimir Livadić, and six Šantić’s letters to Milan Ćurčin, which can be divided into two categories, the first being their correspondence concerning the foundation of Nova Evropa [New Europe magazine] and their collaboration on its first issue (the correspondence kept up from the end of March until the mid-August 1920) and the second the correspondence concerning their collaboration on the issue dedicated to Branko Radičević (May 1923). The oldest Šantić’s letter dates from 1914 and the newest is from 1923 and was written only a few months before the poet’s death. Also analyzed is a telegram which Šantić addressed to the publisher S.B. Cvijanović, also in the possession of the Library.
