Summary/Abstract: At the end of 1916, Iaşi became the ,,war capital of Romania”, the Royal Family, the army, the government, the Parliament and a large part of the population from the regions captured by the Central Powers, were retreating into the old capital of Moldova. The human drama that took place then, was amplified by winter, famine, typhus and a terrible railway accident at Ciurea. However, in Iaşi Romanians found again their trust in their destiny, rediscovered the force of solidarity and the power to win. In Moldova, the armed resistance was organized and the core of the state around which Romania was established was preserved. In Iaşi, at the urging of King Ferdinand, the Government and Parliament made important decisions such as the introduction of universal suffrage and the implementation of the agrarian reform. In Iaşi the delegations of Basarabia and Bukovina came to inform their desire to unite the country. Due to the political efforts made in Iaşi it was possible to achieve the Great Union from 1st of December 1918. The resistance from Iaşi is a heroic episode due not only to its people. This was the historical work of Romanians everywhere. In those years of uncertainty, Iaşi had an essential role in building the history of our nation, which is why the city can be rightly called the ,,capital of the Romanian Resistance” and ,,capital of the National Renaissance”.
