Summary/Abstract: The Hungarian word for "superstition" is "babona", and the root of this word is "bab", meaning "bean". Botanical species names containing the word "bab" are very frequent, as are the proverbs and sayings referring to (mostly poisonous) beans and the popular superstitions of beans. The study focuses on the superstitious significance of these plants from a linguistic, more specifically etymological, as well as from an ethnographic point of view.
