Summary/Abstract: The Russian priests belong, in the XIX-th century, to an endogamous caste, neither serfs, nor nobles, absolutely incapable of social ascension, stuck in their status like a body of Levites. Mysticism is the euphemistic name given by the clergy to a double situation : the lack of implication of the Church in society, and the absence of any theological thought, due to pervasive illiteracy and censorship.
