Summary/Abstract: The text offers a critique of clichés inherited from the twentieth century by which we continue to think about art. It proposes a rethinking of the categories “timeless” and “universal” applied to the works of art in view of the ongoing changes of the contemporary world. What has happened with the European humanistic tradition during the fracture between modern and postmodern culture but also after that? How could we describe the artistic processes beyond Lyotard’s concept of postmodern situation? Some examples from European and Bulgarian theatre are quoted.
