Summary/Abstract: Most of the counties in medieval Hungary authenticated their documents with the personal seals of the alispáns (vicecomites) and the noble magistrates (judices nobilium). In the late middle ages, however, an increasing sense of common identity on the county level resulted in the desire for a common seal of the county universitas. While Somogy county was granted a coat-of-arms of its own, in the north-eastern counties of the realm the noble magistrates started to use un-personal, official seals instead of the previously used personal emblems. The four new seals gradually emerged as the collective symbol of the county nobility, thus anticipating the corporate seal.
