Summary/Abstract: The Slovak heritage industry has a rather long (post-1990) history of transforming major personalities -- first of all, monarchs -- of the historic Hungary into ’products’. The paper analyzes this phenomenon, and dedicates special attention to how these processes affect the transnationalization of Slovak identity. The paper also attempts to theorize a bottom-up type model of the institutionalization of memory, which is dominated by local actors of the heritage industry. This bottom-up model offers a contrasting approach to the top-down institutionalization process that was typical for most of the 20th century, and which was built on official textbooks and public areas.
