Summary/Abstract: The term "community of fate" (sorsközösség) in Hungarian public discourse was borrowed from German historiography and social sciences, as a mirror translation of the term Schicksalsgemeinschaft. It gained wider currency in Central Europe (and in Hungary) from the beginning of the 20th century, sometimes in opposing ideologies and systems of thought. The notion proved to be relevant in the political and public discourses of this region in the context of national self-definition as well as concerning the relationship between the "ruling nation" and its ethnic minorities. The term is double-faced in German Jewish and Hungarian Jewish literature and thought: it expresses historical identification and solidarity with the surrounding majority nation in assimilationist ideologies, while in völkisch or Zionist ideologies it expresses the same with Jewry.
