Summary/Abstract: István Burián’s career in Austria-Hungary’s consular service commenced right after his graduation from the Eastern Academy (Orientalische Akademie), when he was appointed trainee consul to Alexandria in 1872. After this first appointment, he occupied the post of vice consul in Bucharest, Belgrade and Sofia in turn. He received his first consular assignment in 1882, when he was sent to Moscow to be in charge of the Austro-Hungarian consulate general for four years. This research paper is primarily concerned with the internal and foreign affairs of Russia in the 1880s with a particular focus on one of the influential political phenomena of the decade, Pan-Slavism. The paper provides an overview of the Pan-Slavic movement and its politicians in the aforementioned time span, predominantly based on the reports of István Burián, the Austro-Hungarian consul general in Moscow.
