Summary/Abstract: One of the earliest experimental puppet theatre shows in Bulgaria was staged in 1924 by the artists, members of Rodno Izkustvo (National Art) Society, who founded the Brambazatsite Band. The show drew on a variety of sources and the unfolding stage incarnations, as backstage actors moved their little puppet doubles, clearly made up for having no discernible storyline. It was a manifestation of the avant-garde artist: an overgrown kid at play, both fantasizing and fantasized, an one-man orchestra fragmenting the world into all sorts of subjects, surfaces, roles and realities. In this format and cast, that early puppet show had no follow-up. It is nothing but a distant memory now of a remarkable meeting point between an accomplished technique of performing and a sophisticated inspiration, between the impulse and the fulfillment of the avant-garde on the borderline between the popular and the elitist.
