Summary/Abstract: Norms in the fulfilment of adult roles have disintegrated in recent years, while the very fact of being an adult no longer signifies today the same traits as were still seen relatively recently. Stimulated by the development of capitalist commercial culture, the transformations in everyday life (in Western societies) have blurred the distinctions between childhood, youth and adulthood, and led to smooth transitions from one to the next. The process of generation change is also evolving, due to the new realities of socialisation changing shape dynamically in recent years. Coexistence and cooperation dominate among the tensions between the generations, tensions fuelled by market-like relations carried over into microstructural subworlds. Meanwhile the new generation is increasingly ‘isolating itself’ by becoming immersed in the benefits of virtual parallel spaces comprising ‘their’ world, one often incomprehensible to adults. This paper is an attempt at making a preliminary diagnosis of contemporary patterns in entering or not entering adulthood, and of the anomie within the process of generation change.
