Summary/Abstract: In the texts by Viktor Astaf’ev Sheppard and His Wife and Michail Shishkin Letter Book the sentimental and naturalistic elements are interweaving, the ideal image of love collides with the brutal every-day reality of war. Viktor Astaf’ev’s work has been labelled with the subtitle “modern bucolic tale”, there also appear other elements with sentimental roots. The novel of Michail Shishkin belongs to the genre of epistolary novel, which is present in literature since XVIIth century and utilized successfully until this day. In both of the analysed narrations we can notice some correlated oppositions: man—woman, war—peace, love—hatred, reunion—parting and others. The aim of the article is to comparatively analyse both texts and to show similarities and differences in the conceptualization of the subject of war and love.
