Summary/Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to analyze the relationship between the development of the consumer society and sustainable development. The consumption is one of the crucial contemporary analytical categories. A number of social researchers claim, that we live in the consumer society. The phenomena specific to the consumer society are being considered as the threat for the sustainable development (in ecological and socio-economic context). The critical discourse over consumption is focused on the processes as: over-consumption of resources of natural environment, commodification, creation of false needs or consumerist culture. Among them, the growth of consumerism attitude is the main threat for idea of sustainable development. The paper examines the level of this attitude among young Polish men to estimate it’s threat for the implementation of sustainable development in Poland. The analyze is based on the findings of the research over consumer orientation towards commodities conducted in 2010’ among students of Adam Mickiewicz University (N = 446).
