Summary/Abstract: According to population census data an increasing number of persons live in single-person households, that is, in a household created by a person, while the number of households based on marriage or cohabiting partnerships declines. Although the majority of households continued to be married or cohabiting in the period between 1970 and 2011, the proportion of single-person households rose steadily, with the number of marriages and cohabiting partnerships declining from decade to decade. According to the 2016 microcensus the proportion of couple based households rose, and that of the single-person households decreased as compared to 2011, so three out of ten were single households in 2016. Several researches deal with the introduction of partnership-based households, however, so far few analyses have been made about the single, childless, partner seeking youngsters, called the „singles". The aim of this study is to take a snapshot of this population – on the basis of population censuses of 2001 and 2011 – and to show who they are, how many they are, and what social characteristics they have. Furthermore, we are also attempting to draw up a „singles’ map" of Hungary.
