Summary/Abstract: The family co-operative was featured in numerous Hindu-European nations. It originates from the most ancient period, which precedes the time of written sources. This family institution existed in the antique times - in Rome and Greek city-states, but it was present even much later - among Germanic and, especially, Slavic peoples. In Serbian medieval lands it was known as the "House". It is mentioned in historical legal sources, as charters of Serbian rulers, city statutes, and Dusan's Code.
