Summary/Abstract: The article examines the place and and the importance of the monastery compounds in Northeast Bulgaria during IX-XI century. Special attention is dedicated to the monasteries, seals, and inscriptions discovered during the last decades. A mapping is provided for our cultural and litarary development in the period mentioned above. Its main directions are pinned down with the help of a concept taken from contemporary teoretical physics and philosophy called The arrow of time. Through its implementation which is accompanied by the use of another parallel concept introduced as The arrow of spaces, we delineate three major trends which define the cultural genesis of the Bulgarian Northeast during the IX-XI century: Danubian (Northwest), Black Sea (East), and Balkan (Southwest). A point of reference to the three trends is Pliska.
