Summary/Abstract: The Canary Islands have always stood as a powerful attraction to voyageurs, either due to their strategic location – which turns them into a compulsory stop for the great maritime campaigns sailing the Atlantic-, or because of their scientific interest. The numerous travel writings published in the nineteenth century after rather long stays in the Islands evidence that the number of French travellers to the Archipelago is particularly significant during this period. Travel writings by Webb, Berthelot, Dumont d’Urville or Coquet, among others, consist of depictions of those lands and account for different studies carried out in them. In addition, those works include unquestionably valuable drawings and engravings. We aim at examining the role of these images and their connection to the writings. Whether they only illustrate the authors’ descriptions or they add more contents to the words, it is undeniable that the illustrations not only provide the reader with information, but also with an obvious aesthetic pleasure.
