Summary/Abstract: Objective: the main objective of the article was defined as the recognition of risk areas of inter-organizational cooperative relations, which are the biggest threat for small business entities, with particular emphasis on family businesses. Research methodology: the study presents the results of the empirical research employing an in-depth survey, direct interview and participatory observation carried out on a sample of 159 small entities located in Poland, of which around 85% were family businesses. The factor analysis was adopted as the main statistical method allowing classifications and data reduction. Result: based on empirical research, it can be concluded that from the perspective of small enterprises, including family ones, the most important risk factor in the cooperation process is the risk occurring in cooperation with large entities with substantial bargaining power. While cooperating, small entities should pay particular attention to risks of the following nature: competence and communication, loss of autonomy, loss of resources, strategic, differences in management vision, partner’s misconduct, wrong assessment of effects, globalization, goal setting, environmental, lack of innovation and collectability of receivables.
