Summary/Abstract: In June 1974, a bar code was scanned for the first time at the checkout at one of the supermarkets in the USA. The product with the bar code was Wrigley chewing gum. Currently, 5 codes are scanned daily at the checkouts at supermarkets, other stores or warehouses around the world. The potential of these several bars is huge and increases with the development of modern technologies. Companies that have applied the GS1 system notice efficiency in managing the supply chain and shortening the time of placing orders and deliveries. The GS1 standards have also been applied in Poczta Polska. In the first period, the GS1 standards were used to identify registered letters. Since 2005, the SSCC identifier has been used by Poczta Polska on an increasingly large group of registered mail offered by the operator on the postal services market. The standardization of mail labels by Poczta Polska and postal operators operating on the European Union market is primarily aimed at reducing costs, especially mailing costs in international traffic. It also aims to ensure full transparency in the supply chain and lead to shortening the delivery time of mail. These benefits are very important from the point of view of customers using the opportunities of the rapidly growing e-commerce market. The aim of the article is to review the available literature on the GS1 standard and its application by the selected logistics operator – Poczta Polska S.A.
