Summary/Abstract: The professional behavior of the Russian armed forces during the annexation of Crimea and the conflict in the east of Ukraine prove that they have undergone a thorough transformation. The aim of the article is to evaluate the modernization of the armed forces that took place over the last decade and to point to the direction of its further changes. The article reviews the reforms carried out by Russian defense ministers Anatoly Serdyukov and Sergei Shoygu. It explains what conclusions result from the involvement of the Russian armed forces in the conflict in Ukraine and in Syria. The changes that will take place in particular types of armed forces in the near and longer term are indicated.
