Summary/Abstract: The Spanish Renaissance period cannot be understood without the contribution of Fray Luis de León. He was a theologist, a translator and a poet of unique personality, the creator of a diversity of works, marked by classical models, by Italian influences and by Christian humanist ideas. A tireless supporter of the Castilian language, he was constantly preoccupied by the problems of his time and confident in man’s ability to become better through education. He writes biblical comments that are easily understood by everyone and mostly clear, persuasive, didactic literature. La perfecta casada follows the same pattern; it’s a guide meant to help young wives reach the path of perfection, a way of increasing their awareness regarding matters, such as the personal and social responsibility of the part they play, as wives, in society. A hero is someone who fulfills his duties, in an attempt to honor, with his attitude and his entire life, the divine harmony. The antihero is someone who grows apart from the ultimate Christian model, Jesus, finding instead more similarities with the animal side of oneself. Ignorance is considered to be the ultimate evil. The author wishes to make this evil vanish by making sure his readers have a handy guide meant to teach, explain, scold and encourage those who embark on the laborious journey of inner perfection.
