Summary/Abstract: There is a common discussion in subject’s literature whether hard factors (physical space) or soft ones (inter-organizational relationships) more determine the innovation activity in the sector. The main objective of the study was an attempt to find directions, strengths and differences in the influence of spatial and vertical proximity and horizontal relations on the innovative activity of industrial enterprises in Poland. Authors will try to answer for 3 significant questions: Are these factors influencing on the innovative activity of industrial enterprises in Poland? What is the nature of this impact – homogeneous or heterogeneous? Are there any cross relations between sector’s participants which impact its innovation? The methodological part of this article has been prepared based on a multivariable stepwise logistic modelling based on probability. The research on over 5 209 industry enterprises in Poland, has shown that the impact of the investigated variables varies in both direction and strength, confirming their heterogeneous nature. Spatial approximation play a different role in Poland than in many technologically well developed countries. Multivariate models have also shown the presence of much more internally complex cross-relationships that determine the innovative behaviour of enterprises.
