Summary/Abstract: The aim of the present paper is to analysethe discriminatory potential of the national interest notion, both from a historical perspective and starting with its defining landmarks. It is important to underline that the concept in itself does not generate the premises for religious discrimination, rather its faulty operationalization by its main interest bearer – the state, by which the transposition in practice of the political interests are accomplished. Finally, the Biblical precepts regarding the approach of the parameters that compose the national interest and the relation between the individual and the state are analysed in the context of the freedom of conscience.
