Summary/Abstract: This paper came to being as a result of parallel reading of books by Thomas Mann 55 Speeches over the Radio to Germany and by Andrej Mitrović On City of God and Bad Salvation. Finding the popular writer as a radio publicist resulted in asking a number of questions concerning the author whose works were and still are of interest for researchers, who by building up their knowledge of the past and dealing with phenomena of European history of the fi rst half of 20th century, realized the „importance of researching the relation between history and art, artist and his social, political and ideological surroundings, opening thus the fi eld for critical remarks and the use of a work of art as a complex and special source for understanding historical reality“. By collecting his texts into two parts (The Historical in The Magical Mountain and The Heritage of the Manns) Mitrović convinces us again that the possibility of building up knowledge about past is more than tempting for researchers if they regard history as a whole „of all phenomena connected with social life of people throughout time and that only through analytical approach the understanding of wholeness of history can be persistently achieved“.
