Summary/Abstract: Not only did Camus include in his philosophical essay The Myth of Sisyphus an appendix dealing with “Hope and Absurd in the Work of Franz Kafka”, but Kafka’s The Trial (1925) seems to have inspired him when writing The Outsider/The Stranger (1942). Each of these two books revolves around a hero who, for reasons unbeknownst to him, is subject to the judgement and the condemnation of the society. Both characters live in a world inescapably dominated by nonsense, where the absurd being rejects the divine and obstinately searches for answers from humans only. With no solution whatsoever, incapable of finding a reasonable explanation for the irrational situations they are in, these characters declare the incoherence of reality and emerge as antiheroes, very different from – even opposed to – the traditional heroes.
