Summary/Abstract: This paper deals with the central character in Hortensia Papadat-Bengescu’s last novel, Străina (The Stranger), a young girl embodying the perfect modern antihero, who is converted into a heroine at the end of the book. Stressing Ina’s aspirations for an ideal love, her need for freedom, her taste for rebellion, along with her many failures and existential crises, we follow her journey towards a happy marriage attained through the change of her very essence. Since there is no final version of Hortensia Papadat-Bengescu’s last book, our analysis is based on a reconstruction offered by the editor Gabriela Omăt. In her endeavour, the editor took over chapters that had been put in order by the novelist herself, but she also retrieved fragments never published before.
