Summary/Abstract: The succession process is crucial for the efficient operation of any firm. Because of the complexity of this process and its importance for effective business continuity, it is widely discussed in economic literature. Succession is of particular importance in family firms which are traded on the stock market. Business owners often face the dilemma of trying to preserve the continuity of family character of the firm - then potential successors may be chosen from a narrow circle of people who do not always have the right talents and preparation to run the business. This paper attempts to analyze the succession process in family companies listed on the stock exchange. A description of possible solutions is described. Key factors determining the behavior of the current owner have been characterized.
