Summary/Abstract: In the context of globalization and high competitive pressures, it is a great challenge for Europe to maintain its current position as the most attractive tourist destination in the world. The tourism sector is also an important driving force for regional development and cohesion of the EU. The article presents the most important recommendations for the tourism sector included in the EU documents. An example of cross-border tourism cooperation projects under Interreg programme was the evaluation of the impact of such projects on building transnational relationships.
