Summary/Abstract: This article attempts to examine a romantic family in a… postmodern context. It is the family of Father Bilaÿ in La nièce de l’imam (The Imam’s Niece) by the Malian writer Mandé Alpha Diarra. With the arrival of Titi in Missiran, the capital of Farafina, there begins a serious family crisis, which opposes the husband to his four wives, the father to his eldest son, but also the different co-wives to each other. Henceforth, conspiracies, low blows and “maraboutages” compete with the narcissism, the selfishness and the egocentrism of this father of the family, whose main quests focus on his taste for parade, his worship of the body and his materialism. In short, within this universe, the notion of “family” loses its precious means of defense and illustration. We are definitely there, in the strong dramatic atmosphere of an African social novel, where the values of family cohesion and ethics are eclipsed by new, yet... inoperative “values”.
