Summary/Abstract: Terrestrial areas of the United States of America cover more than 1,2 million square kilometers, accounting for approximately 14% of the land area. Among others they are national parks, protected landscape areas, nature reserves and so-called national recreation area. At the same time it is worth saying that these areas are among the most visited protected areas in the world - the number of recreation visitors in national parks exceeded 330 million in 2016. The matters presented in the article focus on issues related to the forms of natural resource protection available in the United States, and bringing them closer to the theoretical context of sustainable development, which is the core of our policy. Completion of the subject matter is a catalog of practical solutions implemented the theoretical assumptions. The conducted research was based on the following sources: • documents and publications available in the Parks and National Park Service websites analysis of existing data), • information obtained during discussions with park staff (interviews with elements of in-depth interview), • subject literature.
