Summary/Abstract: In the first, theoretical part of the present paper the authors will concentrate on the concept of willingness to communicate (WTC) with regard to the cognitive, affective and cultural factors likely to foster its development. Also, the overview of WTC-focused research will be presented. As for the second, empirical part, it is intended to discuss the results of a study aimed at examining ten English philology students’ changes in the willingness to communicate in English in the virtual world of Second Life (SL) and the reasons for these changes. The study participants were asked to visit SL in their free time and communicate in English in this environment for the period of one semester. The quantitative and qualitative data, gathered through a questionnaire for every single session in SL, indicated changes in WTC levels and revealed reasons for them.
