Summary/Abstract: Our article investigates the question of the choice of the mediaeval writer to oppose St. Nahum of Okhrid to an extremely powerful cult which is typical of Slavonic paganism – the cult of the bear. The authors suggest that this choice is not accidental but dominated by the wish of St. Nahum to defeat a strong pagan enemy. The article features various examples of the bear cult in Slavonic folk and literature texts.
