Summary/Abstract: The article presents considerations regarding the assessment of possible needs and benefits related to the establishment of another institution in the public finance sector − the fiscal council. A review of the literature on the subject, as well as the results of empirical research indicate that there is incompatibility in this respect. Despite the lack of unambiguous positive effects confirming the effectiveness of the functioning of fiscal councils and their impact on obtaining positive financial effects, such bodies were established in all European Union countries, except Poland. Based upon this, the question arises whether public authorities in our country should act to establish a fiscal council. Another question is where it should be located in the legal and organizational scope in Poland and what functions and role it should fulfill in the public finance sector in the context of challenges related to maintaining fiscal sustainability and the stability of the public finance system.
