Summary/Abstract: The present article includes a new interpretation of the Early Avar Age equestrian burial from Szegvár-Sápoldal; publication of nine recently recovered looted burials around the grave and the common evaluation of the cemetery. Burial customs are discussed in detail (e.g. niche dug from the end of the grave pit, burial of animal parts, presence of obuli etc.). Judging from the funerary traditions, the Sápoldal community could belong to the successors of the population arriving from the East European steppe and invading the territory east of the Tisza after 568. The cemetery could have been formed in the decade following 650 and was used for a very short time, a 10–15 years long period.
