Summary/Abstract: IT governance has become an important topic in both academic research and organizational practice, due to the rapid growth of IT use both within and across enterprises, increasing regulatory pressure, continuously changing enterprise’s business strategy, and the need for aligned IT decisions. However, knowledge that identifies the success factors and success measures for enterprises remains limited. Although some studies investigate single approaches to IT governance, none of these consider both conventional and agile IT governance principles and their success factors in an integrated and complementary way. To address this research gap, the paper aims to identify the relevant categories for business success on the one hand, and the success factors and success measures of IT governance on the other hand. The results suggest that IT governance is beneficial in relation to business success at shareholder level, customer level, human resource level and internal process level through success enablers at structural, process and relational mechanism levels. The study argues that success enablers are complementary in the sense that they not only increase business success when applied independently, but even more so if utilized simultaneously.
