Summary/Abstract: Identity as a major focus can be inferred from the theatre of Matei Vișniec through a multitude of negations. Thus, man can be seen as an instrument of destruction, instead of being an animal with a past he is the animal without memory, man can try to no longer differentiate himself from commodity or prefers to be lost in his endeavour to regain his identity. The plays in Vișniec˙s The Balkan Trilogy do reconfigure a `homo balkanicus` who has forgotten how suffering begets suffering; however, the possibilities to recuperate man`s lost identity are also present and traceable.
