Summary/Abstract: Credit cooperatives have been established in the Polish lands since the midnineteenth century. From the very beginning these specific enterprises were focused on a man and their physical and social needs. Therefore, co-operative banks were set up for economic and moral raising of poorer social strata – members of cooperatives. Over the years the idea of co-operation in Polish co-operative banking sector has evolved depending on current economic and political situation. In the period of the Polish People’s Republic the original model of co-operative banking sector was deformed by some kind of apropriation of the co-operation by socialism. After the Polish economic transformation co-operative banks lost their co-operative character and became similar to ordinary universal banks.
