Summary/Abstract: This study takes a fresh look at Posidonius’ practice of searching for the etymology of names among the nations of the same kin and, in particular, at how Strabo makes use of it in his accounts of various barbarians. Strabo’s narrative is better understood if we follow their ethnographic model: the kin groups have identical or similar appearance, customs, language, and have adjoining territories unless they migrated to another abode. Beyond its descriptive value, the sameness functions as a structuring principle and is often invoked to support an argument. Strabo uses such digressions to advance his own views about writing geography, about the science of Homer, about civilization and barbarism, and not least to present himself as a talented scholar.
