Summary/Abstract: In this article the author discusses some issues and theories regarding the Northern frontier sector of Dacia Porolissensis. Unlike Porolissum or Bologa, the northern sector, localized right in front of the auxiliary forts from Arcobara and Sammum, is less understood. With a particular design and functionality, the northern sector has a layout generated mainly by the topographical requirements and socio-spatial perceptions. In a quite regular space patterning, the dynamics of the frontier and the modus operandi are recognized in the valley areas where the so-called burgi are located. These pages are about such a burgus, the one from Negrilești (jud. BistrițaNăsăud). The structure was considered by the Hungarian and Romanian scholars a medieval fortress belonging to Radu Negru. In the early 70’s, the Romanian archaeologist from Cluj-Napoca, István Ferenczi, recognized its Roman origins. After almost 40 years, the problem was still unsolved. Recent surveys in the area and comaparison with other frontiers led to new ideas about the role of this structures in the anatomy of the limitis provinciae Daciae Porolissensis. By applying geostatistical analyses like CVA (Cumulative Viewshed Analyses) and Single LOS (Line of Sight) profiles we could see how the valleys are surveyed and how different parts of the frontier are visually (but not only) interconnected.
