Summary/Abstract: The lawyers of the Revolution, and more precisely the 18th century Frenchmen, in search of the institutions of democracy, find them in the institutions of the Roman res publica. The lawyers of the Restoration, and in particular those from the nineteenth century in Germany, seek to limit the institutions of democracy by wiping out the memory of Roman res publica. The task of recalling the institutions of the Roman res publica, unfulfilled by the lawyers of the twentieth century, is the main purpose of the novelists nowadays.
