Summary/Abstract: Long-term unemployment, which in many EU countries is strongly determined by economic and structural factors, is becoming increasingly insensitive to ALMP initiatives developed in these countries. Even so, this group of unemployment-reducing measures is still deemed to have the potential for bringing down the level of long-term unemployment and for slowing down its growth. The purpose of the article is to present and evaluate ALMP initiatives intended to reduce long-term unemployment in the EU. The initiatives are contrasted with the lines of action recommended by the Community. To fulfil the purpose of the article, statistical data derived from the Eurostat database are analysed and EU documents and the literature from the years 2008-2015 are reviewed. The research results show major variations in the level and dynamics of long-term unemployment among EU-28 countries. The most difficult situation is observed in countries that have been hit by the financial and economic crisis the most severely. Considering that long-term unemployment is likely to grow in the forthcoming years with the inflow of immigrants to Europe, the microeconomic measures seem insufficient.
