Exchange in the UNASUR: An estimate of the IIT as the basis of development

Summary/Abstract: The analysis of the trade of products manufactured between developed countries has demonstrated that the flows between them adjust less and less to the explanatory traditional scheme and is observed that the trade is of character intraindustrial: the trade is characterized by the simultaneous existence of imports and exports inside the same sector. Nevertheless, the calculation of the intra-industry trade during the period 2002-2013, measured across the indicator of Grubel and Lloyd, in the countries members of the UNASUR demonstrated a weak exchange that only reached 12% of the total trade: where are outlined the participations of the industries of Chemical Products and Machineries and Equipments of Transport. These results allow to conclude that, if alliances like the UNASUR want to promote the local development of the nations, there must be strategies that promote the growth of the industries with base in the exchanges of differentiated products that generate competitions and not dependences of the foreign markets.
