Summary/Abstract: The main object of this article is an oratorio: Laudation of Constantine the Philosopher named Cyril. It was composed in 1970 by Konstantin Iliev (Константин Илиев, 1924 – 1988), a Bulgarian composer and conductor. The major part of the text of that oratorio is from the medieval poetry of Bishop Constantine of Preslav translated from Old Bulgarian to Modern Bulgarian language. In the article two different kinds of the 20th century oratorio composed by Igor Stravinsky and Arthur Honegger are compared with the Konstantin Iliev's oratorio. The survey shows the importance of the use of Modern Bulgarian for understanding the medieval poetry presented in contemporary oratorio on the concert stage.
