Summary/Abstract: The article presents the activity of the Kriterion publishing house from its establishment in 1970 until 1989 with a special focus on the years 1985-1989, a period defined by the most oppressive measures of the Ceaușescu regime. The unfavourable political and cultural conditions notwithstanding, the Kriterion publishing house managed to become a unique example in Romania’s recent history of a multicultural and multiethnic institution with a significant contribution to the mutual understanding and knowledge of literary works written by authors representing various ethnic groups living in Romania by publishing books not only in Romanian and Hungarian but also German, Yiddish, Serbian, Ukrainian etc. Our analysis addresses original works and translations published in Romanian, Hungarian and German, these being the three main languages in which works were published in the 1980s.
