Summary/Abstract: The article takes up polemics with metaphor-mania effect in the analysis of a scholarly discourse. It indicates three differences between a metaphor and a term (even if not sharp and not stable). It presents the term as a compressed micro-narration – a history of paraphrasing uses of the initial, defined terminological expression. It proves right on the example of the genealogy of the term „chronotop”, introduced into theoretical literature at the end of the 1930s by Mikhail Bakhtin. It derives the term from Aleksey Uhtomski’s concept of a dominant, situating it in Russian biological sciences of those times (physics and biology), referring it to application in philosophy and art, in order to prove that trans-disciplinary status of the term does not simultaneously transform it into a metaphor
