Summary/Abstract: Through the 1860s, the beratli merchants are rarely mentioned in the historical sources. The category was not officially removed, but according to the new trade law introduced in 1861 their status was almost aligned to the others. The preserved documents (berats) issued by the Ministry of trade demonstrate in details the rights and the obligations of many Bulgarian beratli merchants. We have documents connected with Hristo Tapchileshtov, Stefan Karagyozov, h. Pavli Ivanov, Georgi Popsimeonov and Radi Mazretov.
