RETHINKING CENTRAL AND EASTERN EUROPE’S IDENTITY: CULTURAL PLURALISM AND MULTICULTURALISM VERSUS THE RISE OF NATIONALISM

Summary/Abstract: Without a doubt, in the last several years, the solidarity and unity in the EU has been challenged by the rise of populism mixed with far-right nationalism. States in Central and Eastern Europe and post USSR states like Ukraine should continue to elaborate their own vision on ethnic minorities, refugees, and immigration issues. In the following paper, the methodology of political science and international relations is used in order to examine the case of Canadian multiculturalism and try to compare and apply it to Central and Eastern European realities. In the CEE region, the states try to influence neighbours’ internal policies in different aspects (and ethnic policy is not an exclusion). The research question of this paper is: Do cultural pluralism or multiculturalism have suggestions for this? The research results show that due to complex historical issues, the post-Soviet legacy and securitization concerns, multiculturalism is a highly unfavourable policy for the region in the near future.
