Playing in the Slaughterhouse

Summary/Abstract: In 1985 the Italian company Magazzini Criminali (highly acclaimed inItaly at the time) performed “Genet a Tangeri” involving the killing of a horse by the employees of the slaughterhouse where the production was presented. The performance caused an outrage in Italy. The authorreconstructs the press discussion that followed, tracing its changing dynamic and its consequences for public discourse and for the lot of the company. Reporting on this event, Semenowicz shows the paradox of the whole situation: both the press lynching of the Magazzini and the complexity of the event itself. She also mentions related events, prompting us to inquire about the relationship between ethics andaesthetics, fiction and reality.
